How to Report School Bullying to the Police

No child should have to endure bullying in a school environment. If you feel your child is being bullied at school, you should first step back and evaluate the situation. Sometimes, children -- especially young children -- may exaggerate the situation and things may not be as bad as it seems to the child. If either physical bullying or harassment, however, is truly occurring in your school, you must take the appropriate actions to help your child and other children.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact the school directly and alert your child's teacher and the school administration of any bullying your child is enduring. The school should always be the first step, especially for minor incidents. However, if the incident is severe and poses a dangerous threat to your child, do not hesitate to take it to the next step.

    • 2

Call or stop in at the local police department if there has been physical harm to your child as a result of bullying or personal items have been stolen or damaged. When bullying reaches this stage, it becomes a police matter. If bullying is not stopped before this point, it is likely to become worse without intervention.

    • 3

Insist on filing a complaint against the bully. Once a complaint is filed, the police will meet with the bully and his parents. Include as many details as you can in your report.

    • 4

Take your child to see his doctor if there is physical harm. The doctor will document the injuries. Request a copy of that documentation to include with your complaint with the police department.

    • 5

Provide the police department with a list of items that were damaged or stolen, along with the approximate value of these items.
