How to Memorize a New Word

Memorizing a new word takes time and dedication if you do not have a photographic memory. There are a variety of techniques you can use to learn new words and remember them, however. These techniques will work on words you must learn for academic assignments or words you simply want to use to broaden your vocabulary. The more you practice using a word, the easier time you will have memorizing it. Even after you memorize the word, however, continue to use it so that it becomes a permanent fixture of your vocabulary.

      Write the word on one side of an index card. Write the pronunciation under the word. Flip the card over and write the definition. Practice reading the word and saying the definition or reading the definition and guessing the word. Take your index cards to work or class with you and practice in your spare time.

      Construct sentences that utilize the word that you're trying to memorize. Use this practice technique whenever you have a free moment. If you want to use the word in a more practical way, include it in scholastic assignments or the written output you produce at work if at all possible.

      Use the word in conversations with others whenever possible. The more you practice using the word in real world situations, the faster it will become a permanent part of your vocabulary.

      Write the word on a piece of paper repeatedly. When doing this, be sure to include the word's definition. The more you write the word, the easier time you will have remembering it. Say it out loud as you write it for extra practice.
