How to Create a Long Poem

Poetry can be a creative outlet for any age and skill level. Many people start off their lyrical journey by writing shorter types of poetry that rhyme, such as a limerick or haiku. If you're feeling a little more adventurous, an epic poem may be the perfect place for you to begin. This type of poetry is typically long in length and focuses mainly on deeds that are accomplished by a hero. This character makes an impact on a particular culture or time period.

Instructions

    • 1

Develop your main character. Determine if the character will be male or female. Place your character in a particular period of time. Make sure your character possesses great characteristics of virtue. Incorporate attributes of large physical stature and super human capabilities.

    • 2

Assign your hero a task. Determine whether the purpose of your hero's journey will be to search for something, learn a particular lesson or guard something of worth. Make sure the task has great importance or impact on the culture.

    • 3

Create interesting supporting characters. Incorporate supernatural or superhuman attributes into your story line. Include battle scenes in which the hero has help from a powerful force, such as the gods, or allow your hero to fight with a powerful weapon.

Make an outline of the plot that involves three phases of your hero's journey which include: the hero being exiled, his journey and his return home. Plan his journey over a large scope of geographic and heavenly travels. Note what he will encounter on his journey and how the quest will be successfully completed.
