How to Memorize Long Things Fast

Whether you want to strengthen your memory -- or need to study and retain some information for a big test -- memorization tactics improve your ability to recall information anytime you need it. One tactic that is helpful is mnemonics. To create a mnemonic, you simply use a keyword or make up a phrase to associate with a listing of words or concepts.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down the list of words or concepts you need to remember. Capitalize the first letter in the word or concept to prepare for creating an acronym. For example, one common acronym to help you memorize the listing of Great Lakes quickly is the word HOMES, which stands for Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie and Superior.

    • 2

Use the first letters in the series to create a code, in order to help you recall the information in order. For example, for the series of colors in a rainbow, it is Roy G. Biv, or red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.

    • 3

Create a story using the main concepts. Use keywords if necessary, in the exact order they need to be in. To help you remember a chain of events, use the first concept word followed by an image, and then add a second word -- to create a small story.
