How to Teach Phonics Through Alphabetical Stories

Phonics refers to the ability to identify the sounds that are associated with letters. This skill is the cornerstone of literacy instruction and is typically a focus of literacy instruction in preschool through second grade. Since phonics is the study of alphabet letter sounds, stories that focus on the alphabet are ideal tools to use when teaching phonics. Children have a tendency to relate to the information presented in books, and using alphabet books to teach phonics promotes a greater understanding of this vital skill.

Instructions

Select titles that appeal to your students. There are several types of alphabet books that focus on a variety of themes. For example, use "The Ocean Alphabet Book" by Jerry Pallotta with children who are interested in the ocean, or "Shiver Me Letters" by June Sobel with children who are interested in pirates.

    • 2

Read the book aloud to children in an interesting and engaging tone. Using an exaggerated tone of voice will grab children's attention and get them interested in listening to the story.

    • 3

Enunciate the letters and the words that begin with each of the letters of the alphabet. For example, say the letter "O" loudly and emphasize the sound the letter "O" makes in the word "ocean."

    • 4

Point to pictures that begin with specific letters.

    • 5

Ask children to identify words that begin with the different letters. After reading a page that focuses on the letter "P," ask children if they heard any words that began with the letter. Alternatively, you can ask children to point out images that begin with specific letters.

    • 6

Ask children if they can identify additional words on their own that begin with the specific letters. Allow children to share the words they think of.
