How to Draw the Three Ghosts of Christmas

Three of the most important characters in Charles Dickens' well known story "A Christmas Carol" are the Ghosts of Christmas. Each ghost presents a different time frame to the main character, Ebeneezer Scrooge, to view: past, present and future. These three distinct spirits are the ones who lead Scrooge back towards the path of humanity. Drawing them involves study, practice and creativity.

Instructions

    • 1

Read about the physical descriptions of each ghost of Christmas.

The ghost of Christmas Past is described as looking like a child but also like an old man. It has a delicate yet muscular figure, smooth skin, long white hair and a bright light coming from the top of its head. It wears a white tunic trimmed with flowers and a "lustrous," "glittering" belt that goes from bright to dark. It has a cap in one hand and a holly branch on another. Due to the fluctuating light, the ghost seems to have a shifting appearance, though it remains distinct at the same time.

The ghost of Christmas Present wears a loose green robe edged with white fur, a holly wreath with icicles and a rusted scabbard without a sword. Its hair is long, dark brown and curly, its eyes are "sparkly", and it is barefoot. Its face is described as "genial."

The ghost of Christmas Yet to Come is described as a "solemn" being that "seemed to scatter gloom and mystery." It wears a black garment that hides every feature of it except one hand. This garment makes the ghost hard to see when it is in a darkened place.

    • 2

Read about how each of the ghosts acts in a given situation and certain surrounding facts about them. For example, the ghost of Christmas Present has more than 1,800 brothers and the ghost of Christmas Yet to Come never speaks and uses its hand to make gestures.

    • 3

Write down what images come to mind when you read about the ghosts. Alternately, sketch the initial ideas you think of.

    • 4

Write down what drawing mediums, such as chalks, crayons, colored pencils or water colors, you think would be good for drawing each ghost. Pick a medium you want to use to draw on, such as card stock, onion skin or parchment paper.

    • 5

Practice different styles of drawing the ghosts based on your initial idea with the drawing medium you have chosen. Pick a style you like best, and practice refining it.

    • 6

Draw each ghost while viewing the practice drawings you like best as a guide.
