How to Teach Kids to Draw the Groundhog's Shadow

Groundhogs Day, (Feb. 2) has been celebrated for generations in the United States as well as Canada. As the legend goes, on Feb 2, if Punxsutawney Phil emerges from his burrow on a cloudy day, the winter season will end early. On the other hand, if he emerges on a sunny day and sees his shadow, be prepared to endure the cold weather a bit longer. Like other holidays, Groundhog's Day can be used in the classroom or at home to teach kids useful lessons, including an art lesson on how to draw Punxsutawney Phil's shadow.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin by teaching kids how to draw a groundhog. A basic cartoon drawing of a groundhog starts with creating a circle for the head, then adding ears, eyes, a nose and then connecting the mouth to the nose with a straight line. Remember to add two buck teeth to your groundhog. Next add the body which is done by essentially attaching, starting 3/4th down the circle you created for the head, an elongated oval shape with two short front paws.

    • 2

Teach kids to draw the sun in the sky, above your groundhog. The length of the groundhog's shadow is determined by the location of the sun in the sky. For instance, if the sun is low in the sky, the groundhog's shadow will be longer.

    • 3

Draw a shadow by copying the outline the your groundhog at a slanted angle. Fill in the shadow in black or dark gray. Show the kids that it is best to let the edge of the shadow they draw be fuzzy, just like shadows in real life.
