How to Cite a Movie Character in an Essay Paper

When you quote a character from a movie in an essay, contrary to what’s probably your first instinct, you don’t cite the movie’s writer as the source. The goal is to give the reader as much information as possible to find the movie the quote comes from. Therefore, your citation must contain information about the movie’s title, when it was released, the studio that backed the movie and so forth. The type of information and the format the information is presented in depends upon whether your teacher directs you to follow the American Psychological Association or Modern Language Association style guidelines for your essay.

Instructions

    • 1

Look up the movie’s credits. Make a note of the movie’s title, producers' names, director’s name, the name of the performer who plays the character, the year the movie was released, the name of the music studio that released the film and the country where the film was released.
