Cheer squads stress several important values, but high effort, teamwork and a positive attitude are most important in building school spirit. Post your team standards on bulletin boards to encourage fun and sportsmanship, and to unify students as a group that works together. Have students add their favorite motivational quotes to the board as the year goes by.
Cheerleaders look forward to specific events, from big rivalry games and homecoming to regional, state and even national competitions. If your school has a particulary important competition scheduled, place a countdown on a bulletin board. Use a calendar or other format and update the countdown each day.
Give different students a chance to be in the spotlight. Devote a section of your board to "Spirit Award of the Week," where you recognize a student who always upholds the values of your school teams. This is a great chance to boost the self-esteem of students who don't participate on a team and thus don't usually enjoy the spotlight.
Create a living scrapbook on the wall. Help students document the school year by updating the bulletin board scrapbook with pictures and fun memories from major events. Make sure to get a big group shot at every event. Keep small items that can be tacked up on the board, such as worn out pom-poms or ticket stubs to the homecoming game.
Don't wait until the end of the year for a yearbook. Create a bulletin board where each student gets her own photo, quote and a brief bio. If space allows, leave room around each photo to commemorate achievements that happen throughout the year.
