How to File a Complaint Against a Referee in the MHSAA

The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) is a not-for-profit private corporation. Michigan schools are not required to join MHSAA; membership is strictly voluntary. The MHSAA boasts a membership of more than 1,500 public and private schools. The MHSAA develops common rules for athletic eligibility and competition for the member schools. The official for MHSAA must complete the MHSAA official training before refereeing any games.

      The Michigan High School Athletic Association recommends contacting the athletic director or school principal first to avoid confusion. However, if you have tried this and are unsatified with the results, you can contact the MHSAA yourself.

      Log on to the Michigan High School Athletic Association website at MHSAA.com.

      Click on "Contact Us" in the upper right-hand corner of the home page.

      Click on the "Subject" drop down-menu. Here you have nearly 50 choices for the subject or your email. There are three choices that work for informing the MHSAA about the behavior of a referee: General, Executive Committee or Officials Topics. The subject categories begins with "General" and the rest are listed alphabetically in the drop-down menu.

      Complete the form. Note that they will not respond to anyone who does not supply all of the requested information (with the exception of your email address) and will typically respond to those who supply all of the requested information by telephone or by regular mail.
