A Kid's Dance Team Bonding Activity

Team bonding and building activities are essential to the well-being of a dance team. First and foremost, children that do not get along well together will be encouraged to work together outside of dance practice. Also, team bonding and building activities can be used to teach life lessons at this impressionable stage of a child’s development. Long-term friendships can be formed and lessons taught, while having fun at the same time.

Instructions

  1. Trust Exercises

    • 1

Have the team stand in two parallel lines and join hands together in the middle. Another team member stands on a chair or table and essentially “falls” into the clasped hands of the remainder of the team. Every member of the team takes turns doing this until a full cycle has been completed.

    • 2

Ask the team to sit in a circle. Each member of the team takes a turn and addresses a question to other members of the team. Each member in turn answers the question asked. This exercise is not meant to be similar to “Truth or Dare;” questions about life aspirations, travel plans and dreams should be asked.

    • 3

Blindfold all of the members of the team, then lead the team through a trust walk. The trust walk could be outside where there are many obstacles such as trees and hills. The instructor advises the member at the front of the team. Then, she passes the advice on until it gets to the end of the line. If the information is received correctly, the obstacle course is easy to navigate.

    Fun Games and Ideas

    • 4

Organize a party for the dance team where they can socialize together. It could be a slumber party, pizza party, or something similar that is equally as fun. Bowling is always a good team idea. This way, the members of the team can get to know one another a little better outside of practice.

    • 5

Play a fun game such as charades or “Who Am I?" In this game, a sign is taped to one team member's back with the name of a famous person. The other members of the team need to supply information to the participant until she can guess who the famous person is.

    • 6

Have a practice with a theme. Ask the members of the team to come to practice with a certain theme in mind. Some ideas are superheroes, “Twilight” or holiday themes.

    Community Ideas

    • 7

Do community service. There are many organizations and places in every community that need help and would love to have it from a team. Ask around to find community groups that may need some help.

    • 8

Host a fundraiser. You could try a bake sale or car wash, or even go door-to-door. Such activities help the team work together and encourage pride in their work, while raising money for the team at the same time.

    • 9

Go for a charity walk or bike ride. Pick a charity of your choice, and organize the team together for the walk or bike ride.
