How to Draw Dinosaurs for Kids

Kids love dinosaurs. You can integrate math, science and art in a dinosaur drawing project that directs kids to use concepts of geometry such as measuring shapes, lines and angles to create the outline of a dinosaur. Students can follow up the activity with research on the Mesozoic Era, paleontology and dinosaur life and can embellish drawings by adding detail and color. Start their journey with a favorite, the T-rex.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your paper horizontally on a flat surface. Draw a point in the middle to indicate the center and where to begin your drawing. Use your T-rex picture as a reference.

    • 2

Draw a horizontal, 3-inch-long line. Draw a vertical 2-inch-long line in the middle of your horizontal line to create perpendicular lines. Draw an egg-shaped torso around the lines.

    • 3

Draw a point 1/2 inch to the top-left area of the curved torso to create space between the dinosaur torso and the head. Draw a horizontal egg-shaped head approximately 1 inch long and 1/2 inch tall starting from and connecting at the point.

    • 4

Connect the head to the torso by drawing two curved lines that are parallel to each other and approximately 1/2 inch apart to create a neck.

    • 5

Measure 3 inches from the back end of the torso. Mark a point. Draw a line that starts at the top back of the torso and slightly curves until it reaches the point. Draw a semi-loop that curls upward from the point to create the tip of the tail. Draw a curved line from the top tip of the tail so that the line curves, widens and ends at the bottom of the torso, completing the tail.

    • 6

Draw a 1-inch-diagonal line from the top to the bottom of the torso approximately 1 inch in from the tail. Connect another 1-inch-diagonal line from the bottom of the first line so that it creates an obtuse angle between both lines. Draw a 1/2-inch-diagonal line in the opposite direction from the bottom of your second line to create a 90-degree angle. This step makes the outline of the left leg.

    • 7

Draw the diagonal right leg line starting approximately 1/2 inch away from the torso so that it begins at the bottom of the tail. Imitate the bottom two lines.

    • 8

Draw two right angles that are parallel from each other at the bottom front area of the torso, just below the neck, to create the left arm. Attach the wrist with two pointed fingers to create a claw. Repeat this step to create the right arm and hand, drawing the lines underneath the left hand lines.

    • 9

Draw a triangle at the midway point on the left side of the head so that the point of the triangle ends halfway into the head to create an opened mouth. Add pointed teeth on both sides of the mouth.

    • 10

Finish the feet by drawing in claw-like toenails. Add definition such as shading or circular outlines around the parts of the legs to create a muscular look. Add details such as eyes and scales. Erase any unwanted sketch lines. Color your dinosaur.
