How to Do a Friendship Letter for Kids

Writing a letter is a beautiful way to express your friendship with another person. Teaching children early on how to write a letter, especially a paper letter sent by snail mail, will introduce them to a richly rewarding activity that is both enjoyable in its own right and brings great joy to other people. The basic format of a letter of friendship is easy to learn, and once your child receives a letter in reply, he may become hooked.

Instructions

    • 1

Write today's date in the upper right corner of the first page of the letter.

    • 2

Begin your letter by addressing your recipient with the phrase "Dear Alex," substituting your friend's name instead. This part of a letter is called the salutation, and it should appear at the left on its own line, followed by a comma.

    • 3

Compose one or more paragraphs, starting on the line below the salutation. This is called the body of the letter. Use the paragraphs to describe what you have experienced or thought about lately, ask questions and express things you like about your friend. Indent the first line of each paragraph.

    • 4

At the end of the letter, write the closing on its own line at the left edge of the page. The closing is a word or phrase like "Love," "Your friend" or "Sincerely" followed by a comma. Sign your name on the line below the closing.

    • 5

Write your name and address in the upper left corner of the front of the envelope and your friend's name and address in larger letters in the center of the envelope. Attach sufficient postage to the upper right corner of the envelope, insert your letter, seal it and put it in the mail.
