How to Decorate a Classroom With a Candy Shop Theme

According to the National Confectioner's Association, the first manufactured candies were introduced to the United States in 1854. Since then, numerous companies have added their own products to candy production, and in 1900, Milton Hershey produced his first classic Hershey bar. Children enjoy eating candy; therefore, it makes an exciting thematic unit from which to build a variety of academic lessons for your classroom. To enhance this candy theme, decorate your classroom to look similar to a candy shop by creating a variety of candy decorations.

Instructions

Decorate your door to set the mood as soon as students walk in the classroom. Cut a large piece of butcher paper tall enough to cover the length your door. Draw a large lollipop on the paper, and color it using your school's colors. Write your room number of the door decoration and include the name of each child in your classroom. Write "Our Candy Shop" on the lollipop. Cut this out and place it on your classroom door.

Make candy-themed name tags for every student in your classroom. Write each student's name on a small sentence strip. Allow them to decorate the name tags to place on their desks using a variety of candy-themed items. Provide them with magazines and ask them to look through the pages to find candy items. Have the children cut these items out and glue them on the name tags. Laminate the name tags and place them on the students' desks.

Enhance the look of the classroom by hanging candy-themed items from the ceiling. Allow the students to make these using construction paper and glitter. Laminate all ceiling decorations, and punch a hole at the top each one. String fishing wire from each decoration and hang it from your classroom's ceiling.

Divide your classroom into learning groups based on types of candy. For example, you might choose to divide students up by colors of chocolate candies, lollipops or gumdrops. Use these groups for any group work assigned during your candy unit. Decorate your group's table using laminated candy wrappers taped to their table that represent their group name to enhance your candy shop theme.
