How to Make Pop-up Books for Elementary Children

Pop-up books make learning fun for elementary aged children, providing 3D images and characters that come to life and draw the child into the story. Create pop-ups in handmade books that open up the world of reading for young children, telling a story in a colorful, visual way. Have your child help make the book, encouraging him to create the images described in the story.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold a 9 by 12-inch piece of construction paper or cardstock in half to create a 9 by 6-inch cover for the book. Decorate with crayons or markers and embellish with stickers, stamps or images.

    • 2

Select a 20 lb. paper, such as regular printer paper, to use for the pages of the pop-up book. Use 8.5 by 11-inch printer paper for each of the pages of the book. Fold each of the book pages in half to create each page.

    • 3

Lay the folded paper down with the fold facing you and draw two straight, equal length, parallel lines from the fold toward the open edge of the paper. Position them on the fold in the area where you want the pop-up to open. Space the cuts to allow room for gluing the image you will be using to pop up. Make two cuts to create the tab for each pop-up you want to place on the page. Create different shaped pop-ups by cutting angled lines, such as the roofline of a house, or a jagged border instead of a straight line.

    • 4

Cut the lines through both layers of folded paper and fold inward, create a flap that resembles a step jutting out when the page is opened. Fold the cut tab to crease, then put it back in the original position to match the fold on the card. Open the folded paper and push the cut tab to the inside. Close the folded paper and form a firm crease in the center of the tab.

    • 5

Create additional cuts and folds along the folded edge of the paper for more pop-ups and create additional pages for the book in the same way. Make short, closely spaced parallel lines to create small pop-up areas and longer, more widely spaced lines for larger areas to decorate as pop-ups.

    • 6

Write the text of the story on the blank flat areas of the inside of the folded paper. Alternatively, print the information on plain paper, cut and paste to the page of the book.

    • 7

Attach pop-up decorations on the page with cut out shapes, images or illustrations using glue or double-sided tape. Cut out and glue images that are large enough to cover the front of the pop-up flap but do not extend outside the dimensions of the page when closed. Alternatively, decorate separate papers with stamp pads, stickers or pictures from magazines and glue onto the pop-up tabs.

    • 8

Make additional pages with different sizes, shapes and numbers of pop-ups. Decorate each page and add desired text only to the inside of each page. Stack the pages in the order you want them in the book and glue them together to create a multi-page book; glue the back of page one to the front of page two and continue until all pages are glued together. Be sure all the pop-ups are folded to the inside and avoid gluing areas in contact with the pop-ups.

    • 9

Glue the outside front of the first page to the inside front cover and glue the outside back of the last page to the inside back cover to complete your pop-up book.
