ABC Keyboard Games

ABC typing games can be a great way to help your home-educated child master typing skills. From the basics of understanding that touching keys on the keyboard results in an action to working on speed, there are a variety of typing games available for home schoolers at the preschool age and older.
  1. Learn Your ABC's

    • From Fisher Price, this interactive online computer game is a basic introduction to pushing keys on the keyboard while teaching the alphabet. Ideal for younger home educated students, parents can sit with their child and progressively work up from pushing any key to helping them find the corresponding key on the keyboard. The game is free and a part of many interactive activities that Fisher Price offers for children online.

    Keyboard Letter Recognition

    • The Literacy Education Network provides an ABC typing game that presents the child with the alphabet on the screen, either in upper case or in lower case, with a plain background and font. When the child pushes the correct key on the keyboard the letter on the screen will increase in size and become colorful. The game does not teach proper hand placement for using the keyboard, only recognizing the letters themselves.

    Alphabetic Rain

    • Alphabetic Rain is a free interactive ABC typing game from PowerTyping. Players choose between four levels of play, each increasing in speed, or the "faster" option, which drops the letters at a challenging pace. Game play consists of the letters dropping down slowly like rain from the top of the screen and the player must type the letters on the keyboard before they make it to the bottom of the screen. When finished, players can post their score to compare to other players that day. For those who need help there are links that tell you and show you how to play the game.

    Alpha Munchies

    • ABCya! provides this entertaining ABC keyboard game suitable for young elementary age students, available in three levels, easy, medium and hard. The student first picks a player from choices such as an astronaut or monkey then sets out to stop the alpha critters from getting their lunch by pushing the keys on the keyboard that correspond to the dropping letters before they reach the wall. If the alpha munchies make it past the student to the wall, they will slowly break it down making their way to the food. Once they have broken the wall and taken all of the food, the game is over. The speed at which the alpha munchies fall progresses with each level of play.

    The Cup Stack Typing Game

    • Stacking cups is a game of skill and speed, especially when stacking the cups is dependent on typing letters from alphabet. This ABC keyboard game from ABCya! places letters of the alphabet on cups and students must type the corresponding letter on the keyboard to stack and un-stack them. The score received is determined by the amount of time it takes the student to stack and un-stack the series of cups. If they take too long they receive no score.
