Create a cursive letter matching game for students to play. On one set of index cards, write letters in print and on another write cursive letters. Place the cursive pile of cards face up on a flat surface and place the print cards face down. Invite students to take turns taking a card from the face-down pile of cards and have them find the matching cursive card on the floor. For example, if a student flips over a printed letter "A," she must match it to the cursive letter "A." The student who makes the most matches wins the game. This game is ideal for small groups.
In this game, teams compete to read sentences that are written in cursive writing. Divide the class into two teams and have each team form a single-file line. On the board, write a sentence in cursive and ask the first two players on each team to read the sentence. The first player to raise his hand and read the sentence aloud correctly earns a point for his team. Continue the game, writing new cursive sentences for each pair of students. The team that earns the most points wins.
Have children practice their cursive writing skills with this game. Ask two students to volunteer to step up to the board. After you state a word or a sentence, the two students must write what you have said on the board in cursive handwriting. The first child to write the word or sentence with correct cursive writing remains at the board; his opponent sits down and is replaced by another student. Continue the game until each child has had a turn. The last person standing wins the game.
Let students get active while promoting recognition of cursive writing. Print cursive letters on index cards and place them face down on the ground. Provide children with beanbags. One child at a time, have them toss their beanbags onto an index card. Students must pick up the card the beanbag lands on or next to and read the letter written on it. If the student is correct, she keeps the card; if she's incorrect, the card is placed back on the floor. The child who collects the most cards wins the game. Play this cursive game with small groups of students.
