Cursive Handwriting Lessons

Learning the art of cursive writing is a milestone in every child's educational journey. Workbooks with the letter strokes and exercises can be purchased at bookstores and educational supply stores. But, if you are going it alone, your child must learn to write all the letters, connect them and read cursive passages.
  1. Set an Official Standard

    • Purchase or create your own cursive alphabet sheet. Letters differ slightly among different curriculums and teachers, so you9 will need to have an official sheet for your child to follow. Many cursive workbooks use manuscript style paper, but if you prefer loose-leaf notebook paper, allow your child to use two lines with a skipped line in between.

    Letter by Letter

    • Before beginning your lesson each day, review the alphabet together. Prepare a small paragraph in cursive and have the child read it aloud. This helps her to see the letters connected and understand how they work. Spend one lesson on each letter and have the child fill a page with both the upper and lowercase letters.

    Sentences

    • Once the child has learned all the letters, he is ready to connect. Prepare two or three short sentences for him to copy. Show him the connecting strokes and have the alphabet sheet available at all times. Repeat this exercise until the sentences are easy to copy. Good resources for sentences include inspirational quotes, children's books, history or science textbooks, classic literature and religious materials.

    Paragraphs

    • Once she can write sentences, expand the exercises. Have her write longer passages or pick some short children's poems, recipes and lists. Have her copy them from your written example, so that she must simultaneously read and write cursive. Repeat this until she has mastered the task.

    Switching Back

    • Print a paragraph and have him copy it in cursive. This will show whether he can recall the cursive letter when presented with the printed letter.
