How to Enroll in AP Classes in High School or Home School

Taking advanced placement (AP) courses in high school provides intellectual stimulation for the academically gifted and a host of other benefits as well. Those who take AP classes may qualify for scholarships due to their demonstration of commitment to academic excellence, are more likely to complete a bachelor's degree program within four years and are able to take more advanced courses within their planned field of study. Most high schools offer AP classes as part of their regular curriculum, but even those who are home schooled or attend a school that does not offer AP courses can sign up for an AP course and earn college credits while still in high school.

Instructions

    • 1

Speak to your academic counselor to find out if your school offers AP courses. Be prepared to discuss the requirements of the courses you want to take. Some schools allow anyone to sign up for an AP class, while others only offer the courses to students with high academic standing in their junior or senior year. If you do not fit within those guidelines, you may need to get a letter of recommendation from another teacher stating why you should be allowed to take the course.

    • 2

Sign up for the course with your AP coordinator, if your school offers AP classes. For students whose school do not offer AP classes or home school students who wish to take an AP class, contact the AP Services office. They will assist you in locating an AP coordinator to assist home school students in your area or a high school willing to administer the AP exam to you.

    • 3

Complete all the required class work throughout the course and study to prepare for the AP exam. Talk to your AP coordinator regularly and observe all deadlines for signing up for the exam. Report to the exam on time and make your best effort. A passing score means you will receive college credits for the course.
