How to Enroll in Oklahoma Home School

Oklahoma has the distinction of being the only state in the U.S. where the state's constitution guarantees parents' rights to home school their children. As such, the State Department of Education and the public school system have no authority over home schooling families. There is no legal requirement to notify the state that your children are attending home school. Home school children are not required to take standardized tests. Oklahoma does not require that parents hold degrees. Parents do not need to have any special training in order to provide education at home for their children.

Decide to home school your child in Oklahoma. Oklahoma statutes state that children older than 5 but under 18 must attend a public or private school unless some other form of education is provided by the parents. According to the Home School Legal Defense Association, "other form of education" is interpreted to include home school.

Provide your children with 180 days per year of educational instruction comparable to what the public school system offers. The number of instructional days is part of the home school law. Oklahoma State Standards for each grade level are available from the Oklahoma Department of Education.

Join a state or local home school support group. This is not required, but it will help you to have other home school families to socialize with. Many home school support groups offer classes and co-ops for their members.
