Alphabet Game Ideas

Many children have an easier time learning the alphabet if they are playing a game when doing so. But the lessons don't stop after the child knows his alphabet. He then needs to be able to identify the letters in spite of the various fonts and sizes they come in.
  1. Scramble

    • The alphabet song is an effective way to get your child to recite the alphabet. However, a more challenging feat is to get her to place the letters of the alphabet in order. By either purchasing or creating each letter of the alphabet on paper, cardboard or another material, you can scramble them up and have her put them in order. This is a fun way to get her learning her ABC's quickly.

    Bingo

    • An bingo card can be drawn with animals, fruits and vegetables in each square. Make sure the child knows the names of each object or animal. Write the letters of the alphabet on cards and scramble them. Take turns pulling a card with the child. Each time the letter pulled corresponds with the first letter of the object on the bingo card, place a marker over it. Once a line is completed, tell the child to call out "bingo."

    Spelling

    • Spelling people's names is a great way to get the child to pay attention to the alphabet. Set the letters up where the child can see them. In a classroom, it is helpful to have them at the front of the class and visible to the entire room. At home, you can write them on a piece of paper and put them in front of the child. Spell the name together and point to the letters as you do. The child can spell his own name first and then yours.

    Reading

    • Letter identification in various fonts and sizes is an important way to get a child to identify each letter. After telling her a letter from the alphabet to identify, you can have her circle it in a newspaper until she finds five or 10 of them. You can also write each letter of the alphabet in various ways on individual pieces of paper. Create two or three styles of each letter and scramble them up. Have her search for all of the particular letters.
