Animal Alphabet Ideas

Using animals to help children understand the alphabet is a tried and trusted method. Small children respond well to animals, and teaching them the alphabet by using animals remains sensible. There are also different ways to teach an animal alphabet, which should all heighten a child's willingness to learn.
  1. Animal Story

    • Create an animal story containing 26 animals, all beginning with different letters. Gradually introduce the alphabet to the children by asking them questions at the end of the story. Ask them about an anteater, for instance, and what it eats. Then ask the children to shout out which letter of the alphabet the animal begins with. Go through the alphabet systematically, from A to Z, by describing something about the individual animals. Secondly, get the class to concentrate on the relevant letter of the alphabet as you talk about each animal.

    Photos

    • Pin up photographs of 26 different animals in the classroom. Put up photographs which are not among the usual animals used in alphabets. For example, use "camel" instead of "cat" for the letter "c." This will introduce the children to new types of animals as you teach them about the alphabet. If some of the children have already learned an animal alphabet, explain that there are other animals which also begin with the same letter.

    A Song

    • Compose a song that incorporates animals into the alphabet. Because you will use 26 different animals, it will be easier for children to fully grasp the alphabet connections if the song is broken down into four parts. The first part of the song should be sung, with the children invited to sing along. Play the first part of the song again until all the children have managed to fully understand the animal alphabet connections. Then move on to the second, third and fourth parts of the song as the children catch on.

    Animal Models

    • Use toy models of farm animals and zoo animals to introduce an animal alphabet. The use of a three-dimensional object will aid the learning process considerably, as children will be able to examine what an animal looks like from all sides. If it is impractical to use 26 animals, children should be asked to name some of the letters not represented, along with some relevant animals.
