Research Project Ideas Involving Animals

A research project requires you to investigate a field of inquiry by finding information in books, encyclopedias, on the Internet and by consulting various other resources. Animal research projects can be difficult or easy, depending on your scope. Impress your teacher and get top marks with a research project idea that allows you to investigate something informative and engaging about animals. The best research projects always have text-based evidence to back up their claims.
  1. Species Profile

    • Do an overview of one animal. Choose an animal both that interests you and that you are sure to find material on. Organize your research and presentation by finding the distinguishing features of your animal, its phylum (for example, mammal or reptile), its habitat, the food it eats and how it reproduces. Find a lively color picture in a magazine of your animal and cut it out.

    Adaptation Projects

    • Research how different organisms have adapted to their environments. It is no coincidence that creatures who live on land need to breathe air, while fish and other sea creatures survive in water. Choose one mammal, one fish and one reptile. Decide on one type of adaptation to research, for example, how they defend against predators, eat, reproduce, survive in their climate or anything else applicable. Research and compare. If you can't decide on a good adaptation or group of animals, ask your teacher for assistance.

    Social History of an Animal

    • Choose one animal. Instead of investigating its physical properties or natural adaptations, research how its interactions with humans have changed it over the years. Find out what part of the world it originated in. Find out if human activity eradicated it or brought it to another part of the world. Was it domesticated by humans? How did humans use it for industry? How did selective breeding change its internal characteristics? You might even sketch a history of how this animal has been represented in literature and art.

    Profile of Extinction

    • Do a comprehensive profile of an extinct animal. The woolly mammoth, the saber-tooth tiger, the dodo and all kinds of dinosaurs are just some examples of animals that no longer exist. Find out where your extinct animal lived, what it ate, how it survived and how it died off. Was it because of natural causes or human activity? See if you can draw any lessons from this extinction about how people treat animals in present times.
