PE Minor Game Ideas

Help develop dexterity and build muscles in early elementary children in physical education (PE) class with minor games. Simple yet engaging games that are suitable for this age group will get their blood pumping, develop their motor skills and hand-eye coordination and promote a desire to be physically active.
  1. Parachute Play

    • A parachute is an ideal tool to use for PE games, as the bright colors on these pieces of fabric grab the attention of children, and they can be used for a variety of activities. Play a game called See Saw, in which students sit around the parachute and hold onto it. The students on one side of the parachute pull on it and fall slightly backwards to pull the students on the other side up and the students that are pulled up then fall slightly backwards to pull the children on the other side up, creating a see-saw effect. You could also play a game of popcorn, in which the children on one side of the parachute try to knock balls off the center of the material, while the children on the opposite side try to keep the balls on.

    Relay Races

    • Engage students in simple relay races. Divide children into two teams and have the teams form single-file lines. On your mark, the first child on each team has to run to a predetermined spot and then run back to her team and tag the next person, who then repeats the relay. Alternatively, you could incorporate an object that students have to pass back and forth to one another while relaying. The team to have all children complete the relay wins.

    Tag Games

    • Young children typically enjoy tag, and this game certainly requires physical activity. Select a person to be "it," and this person must run around and try to tag his classmates. Upon being tagged, a person must sit out and the last person standing wins the game and is "it" for the next round of the game. Alternatively, you could play the game in the same manner, but instead of being out, upon being tagged, people join hands with "it" and help him tag the rest of the students. As each student is tagged, they join hands, forming a larger line. The last student untagged is "it" in the next round of the game.

    Ball Toss Games

    • Play some simple games with a ball. Encourage children to stand in a circle and assign a letter of the alphabet or a number to each person in the circle. Toss the ball in the air and shout out a letter or a number; the person who has been assigned the letter or number you have shouted must catch the ball. The person who catches the ball then tosses the ball in the air and shouts a different letter or number and the process repeats as the game goes on. Another ball toss game idea involves having children toss balls through hula hoops. Hang hula hoops in trees or from a ceiling. Provide children with balls, have them stand at a predetermined spot and instruct them to toss the balls through the hoops.
