Elementary Dance Ideas

Keeping elementary school students entertained can be a challenge. They are easily distracted and need structure in their activities. Elementary school functions or dances should be kid-friendly, and themed to give the parents an idea of how to dress their children. There should also be games, music and other forms of entertainment.
  1. Western Dance

    • Western clothing can be fun to dress up in.

For a Western-themed school function, children can be dressed in western-style clothing such as boots, blue jeans and cowboy hats. Games should be Western-themed as well such as a lasso game or a fishing hole. Country music can add another Western layer to the event and line dancing can be taught to the kids as a fun activity.

    1950s Sock Hop

    • Take your children back in time to the 1950s. Children can be dressed in muscle shirts and poodle skirts. Locate local owners of classic 1950s vehicles to display them for decoration. Carnival games can be used such as a traditional ring toss and other games. Play music from the 1950s to keep with the classic 50s vibe.

    Valentine's Day Sadie Hawkins' Dance

    • A fun type of dance to have is a Sadie Hawkins Dance. The girls choose the guys to go with them and they partner up for the night. This should be done mostly for later elementary school students such as fifth graders because romance is not foremost in the minds of first graders. Children may dress as they wish and the music to be played can be whatever is popular among the student population.

    Beach Luau Dance

    • Dress the kids up in Hawaiian shirts and flip flops for a luau-themed dance. Place sand on the floor to make it seem like the kids are on a beach. Games should have a beach theme such as a Hula Hoop contest or a find the pebble under the coconut shell game. Play Hawaiian music for added effect.

    Halloween Dance

    • For a huge hit with the kids and a safe alternative to trick-or-treating around your neighborhood, have your children's school throw a Halloween party where your kids can wear their costumes and play party games for candy. Your children will be able to interact with their friends on Halloween instead of strangers. Play Halloween music and teach dances such as the Monster Mash.
