How to Make Your Own Chalkboard Sandpaper

Making your own chalkboard using sandpaper is a simple and rewarding project. Whether you've decided to home-school your children or you just want a place to display notes, a homemade blackboard is the perfect choice. You'll only need a few items to create your project. The Make Something website suggests making "a smaller, more manageable size and forgoing thickness for thinness" when you make your chalkboard.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a piece of medium density fiberboard. Opt for a thinner and smaller piece ideally, but the decision is a personal choice. The fiberboard is a pretreated piece of wood that is readily available at most home improvement stores.

    • 2

Coat the front of the wood in Rust-Oleum chalkboard spray. Cover the entire side evenly.

    • 3

Let the paint dry for an hour. Sand down the painted side with a light-grit sandpaper. This will force the paint deeper into the wood and reveal any imperfections.

    • 4

Add a second coat of paint to the wood. Allow it to dry for three hours.

    • 5

Apply a third coat and let the board dry once again for three hours. Use the board as you would a standard chalkboard.
