How to Cite References for a Critique Essay

Citation in an essay means giving credit where credit is due. Without citing references, the essay lacks credibility, as does the writer. Learning how to properly cite in popular styles such as the Modern Language Association, or MLA, is an important part of the writing process you should take seriously if you wish to write a credible essay.

Instructions

  1. In-Text Citations

    • 1

Write the author's name in the text followed by the page numbers in parentheses. For example, "Kingsley's opinion was that... (183-85)."

    • 2

Cite the author's name in parentheses with the page numbers at the end of the sentence. For instance, "The predominant themes in the story are... (Benjamin 225-27)."

    • 3

Credit multiple authors of a single work by including both authors' last names followed by the page numbers. To illustrate, "The suggestion... (Johnson and Cooper 82)."

    • 4

Cite two separate locations referenced in one sentence by including the page numbers for the first reference followed by a comma and the page numbers for the second. To enumerate, "Kennington believes this to be true (153-54, 160)."

    • 5

Reference two different authors by their last names and page numbers separated by a semi-colon, such as (Jenkins 54; Payne 222).

    • 6

Cite references in a volume by the author's last name and volume number followed the page numbers separated by a colon. For example, (Wilde 2:4-12).

    • 7

Write citations of an entire volume with the author's last name and volume number. For instance, (Oates, vol. 2).

    • 8

Credit works without an author by using the work's title in the text.

    Works Cited

    • 9

Create a "works cited" list by placing each entry in alphabetical order according to the authors' last names (or title of work for those without authors).

    • 10

Cite books with one author by the author's last and first name, the title of the book, place of publication, publisher and the publication date. For example:

Brinkley, Alan. The Unfinished Nation. New York: Knopf, 1993.

    • 11

Credit works of multiple authors by listing their names in the order listed on the book's title page. Reverse the first author's name only; for instance:

Rowe, Richard, and Larry Jeffus. The Essential Welder: Gas Metal Arc Welding Classroom Manual. Albany: Delmar, 2000.

    • 12

Reference works by three or more authors by listing only the first author and adding "et al." after.
