How to Make a Reference Page for an Essay in the MLA Style

An essay reference page, which is also called a Works Cited Page, tells your reader where you got your information. It gives the reader somewhere to go for additional information and gives your writing credibility. If your essay is written in Modern Language Association style, your reference page should be formatted the same way.

Instructions

    • 1

Get your references together. Every reference you used, whether you directly quoted it or paraphrased it, should be documented on your works cited page. Write the MLA citation for each reference on a piece of paper.

    • 2

Open a new page in your essay document. The page should have 1-inch margins all the way around and use the same font style and size as the rest of your essay.

    • 3

Type "Works Cited Page" centered at the top of the page. Skip one line and move to the left margin for your first reference citation.

    • 4

Type your references alphabetically with one blank line between each entry. If an entry is more than one line long, the lines after the first should be indented.

    • 5

Proofread your reference page to make sure the entries are alphabetical and formatted properly. Make any changes that are needed.
