How to Type an Abstract in MLA Format

Modern Language Association (MLA) format is a style of writing used for essays and research papers in humanities and liberal arts fields of study, such as literature. The basics of MLA style include citations in parentheses that refer to an alphabetical list of references at the end of the paper. Because MLA format does not require an abstract, there is no specific guideline to follow, but you can use MLA general formatting to type your abstract.

Instructions

    • 1

Type your abstract on 8.5-by-11-inch paper. Use 1-inch margins, and double-space lines. Use a 12-point font, and leave only one space after periods and punctuation marks.

    • 2

Type your last name in the upper right corner, one-half inch from the top, then a space and the page number (in consecutive order from the last page before the abstract). Set the type right-justified so it aligns with the right margin.

    • 3

Skip a line, and type the word "Abstract," capitalizing only the first letter of the word, and center it. Skip two lines before beginning the abstract.

    • 4

Indent the first line one-half inch from the left margin. Write a concise, single paragraph that summarizes the main concepts of the paper, essay or article: the objective, methods and conclusions. Include the most relevant data, such as statistics and numerical data that encapsulates the main idea of your paper.
