How to Type an Abstract

With the rise and continued popularity of online journal databases, an effective abstract must hook potential readers. An abstract informs readers about a paper's subject, the methodology behind problem-solving and the result and potential impact of your research.

Instructions

    • 1

Write either a problem statement, or outline the motivation behind your research, depending on which is more compelling.

    • 2

Detail in a succinct manner the methodology employed to obtain your results, including the extent of your research, the number of trials or tests you conducted and the specific variables you were attempting to control or measure.

    • 3

Include the specific results of your research. Use quantitative figures and measurements when possible, avoiding generalized terms such as "significant" or "little."

    • 4

Close with a conclusion statement on the likely impact of your research. Avoid underselling or overselling results.
