How to Write a Psychology Abstract

The abstract of a research paper is a critical aspect of the study. Psychology journals always require abstracts as do professors. Individuals researching psychological topics will read your abstract to determine if your work is appropriate. Your abstract must concisely summarize your research and adhere to the American Psychological Association (APA) guidelines for psychological writing.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the body of the paper first. Once the main sections of the paper are complete, you will have sufficient information to summarize.

    • 2

Center the word "Abstract" on the top of the second page of your paper. The body of the abstract should start on the next line and should be in a block format. Do not indent the first line.

    • 3

Summarize your psychology research, study or literature review briefly in the abstract. Briefly describe your research problem, the methodology, the results and the interpretation of the results.

    • 4

Adhere to APA guidelines for abstracts. Write a maximum of 150 words and keep your writing in the past tense. The abstract should be clear and concise to encourage readers to continue reading.
