How to Compile Citations for the APA

One of the most serious accusations that can be leveled against a writer is that of plagiarism. One account of this kind of intellectual theft can ruin a writer's career. This is why the writing guidelines set forth by the American Psychological Association (APA) include instructions on how to compile your sources using in-text citations and a reference page. In-text citations follow each quote, paraphrase or summary in the body of the paper and point readers to the correct entry in the references page, which includes the complete bibliographical information.

Instructions

  1. In-Text Citations

    • 1

Introduce each quote with a phrase that includes the author's last name, followed by the work's publication date in parentheses. Add the page number (designated by "p.") in parentheses after the quote.

For example: "According to Lewis (1993), 'APA format makes your paper more useful to the reader' (p. 132)."

    • 2

Integrate the name of the author and the date the work was published into all summaries and paraphrases or put the information in parentheses at the end of the sentence. You may also add the page number.

For example: "According to Lewis, most students enjoy APA style after they grow accustomed to it. (1993, p. 24)."

    • 3

Create a corresponding entry in the references section for each quote, paraphrase or summary.

    References Page

    • 4

Begin the references page on a new sheet of paper. Format this page with one-inch margins on all sides and include a header with the title of the paper in all caps aligned with the left margin and the page number aligned with the right margin.

    • 5

Center the word "References" at the top of the page. Do not apply any formatting, such as bold, italics or underlining. Do not place it between quotation marks.

    • 6

Order each citation by the last name of the first author. If there is more than one work by the same author, order the works by publication date, beginning with the earliest. Include every work you cited in the paper, except for personal communications and works of classic literature.

    • 7

Double-space between each line and each entry. Do not number the entries or use bullet points.

    • 8

Left align the first line of each entry and indent subsequent lines 0.5 inches.

    • 9

Place the reference pages immediately after the last page of your paper.
