Open a blank word processing document. Set the margins to be one inch on all sides. The paper should be oriented vertically and have dimensions of 8.5 by 11 inches. Use 12 point Times New Roman font.
Type "Running head: TITLE OF YOUR PAPER" flush left at the top of the sample. Writers will establish a shortened version of their title in the running head that will appear on each subsequent page of their paper. The shortened title should appear in all capital letters and be no longer than 50 characters, including spaces and punctuation.
Insert the number "1" flush right on the same line as the running head. Each page following the title page will proceed in numerical order in the top right side of subsequent pages.
Move your cursor down to the top half of the page. Center your sample's title. Your title should be no more than 12 words in length and not include words that are not necessary or abbreviations. Double space all text in the title and in the rest of the text on the page. The title can take up one or two lines. For a sample, you might write, "Title of Your Paper: A Sample."
Type "First M. I. Last" without any degrees or titles attached to the name a line below the title. Writers' names should follow this format: first name, middle initial(s), last name. Below the name, type the institution where the research was conducted.
