How to Train With a Lifepak AED

A Lifepak automatic external defibrillator can save lives. It is a device that allows a user to administer an electric shock to a person's heart during a cardiac arrest. Most Lifepak AED systems also come equipped with very detailed instruction material. Even the most inexperienced user may successfully aid someone in need. If you want to train with a Lifepak AED, speak with either a medical professional or emergency services personnel to help you get started.

Instructions

    • 1

Understand basic physiology. Know a bit about how the nervous system, brain, heart and lungs all work, for example. A Lifepak AED system is made to administer electricity to the body. You may feel more confident about performing life-saving aid to an unconscious victim when you know how the major life systems in the body are all interrelated.

    • 2

Familiarize yourself with basic CPR and first aid. Know that prior medical training isn't necessary to train with a Lifepak AED, however. Obtain free resources and training from either the American Heart Association or American Red Cross. Learn how to respond during a medical emergency before deciding to train with a Lifepak AED -- a patient may not actually need an electric shock, for example.

    • 3

Practice with a device simulator. Allow learners to train with a Lifepak 500T AED training system, for example. Enable them to learn about shock protocols without the risk of potential injury -- the 500T system does not let trainees discharge electricity. Use the Quick Start Reference card to learn about Lifepak AED system icons. Memorize the difference between device suspension and service warning signs, as well. Lifepak AEDs come equipped with monitoring capabilities -- you can first determine if a patient has a heart beat or pulse, for example.

Attend the American Heart Association's Heartsaver AED training course. Visit the AHA website and click on the link that reads "ECC Class Connector," enter a ZIP code, then place a mark next to the phrase "View Scheduled Classes." Click the "Submit" button, next to find a training location near you -- course costs may vary according to city or state, but most range between $50 and $100. Train to properly use a Lifepak AED on adult or children -- procedures or methods may vary according to age or weight, for example.
