How to Train for R&D Projects

According to a 2004 study of French and Swedish firms, money spent on training and research & development (R&D) provides a large return on investment. Sometimes mismanaged, R&D departments tend to be at odds with the business world. The employees are scientists and engineers concerned more with solutions than with products. Training management teams on how to properly interface with R&D allows companies to turn solutions into products and maximize their return on investment.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold training sessions on proposal writing and budget management. Involve research project leaders and management team members. Discuss guidelines for proposals (such as whether proposals must include estimates of total cost of production). Set expectations for reporting on and meeting project budgets.

    • 2

Discuss management soft skills with the management team. Require team members to role play through potential R&D department situations such as developing a marketable idea from a concept or requesting clarification for technical details.

    • 3

Host brown-bag lunches for R&D personnel to express their managerial preferences and desires to the management team. Talk over and make notes on any points that have been brought up and consider adopting these practices.
