Irish Flying Schools

The Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) oversees flight training and the requirements for private and commercial pilots' licenses and aviation safety standards in Ireland. There are several individuals, clubs and companies authorized by the IAA as "Registered Training Facilities" throughout Ireland, offering private pilot license training in airplane, helicopter and microlight aircraft. "Flight Training Organizations" (FTOs) offer private and commercial pilot training, either in airplanes or helicopters.
  1. Atlantic Flight Centre

    • The Atlantic Flight Centre is located in Cork Airport. The school was founded in 1995 and since then has produced more than 480 graduates who have found work as commercial pilots for European airlines. All flight training is done at the airport; Atlantic operates two ground schools for the required theory courses, one offering evening classes for part-time students and one offering day classes for full-time students. The school uses four Cessna 172s and a Grob 115 for the private pilot license training and Piper PA 34 twin-engined turbo-powered aircraft for the commercial pilot training course.

    National Flight Centre

    • The National Flight Centre is located at Weston Airport, Leixlip, in County Kildare. It is the largest flight school in Ireland and has been training private and commercial pilots for more than 30 years. The school's training airplanes include eight Cessna 150/152s, four Cessna 172s, as well as a Cessna 172 RG, Beech 76 Duchess and a Piper SuperCub. Besides private and commercial pilot training, the school also offers a Flight Instructors course.

    Executive Helicopers

    • Based at Galway Airport, Executive Helicopters began its flight training program in 1999. Besides offering private and commercial pilot training, the school also has courses for night qualifications and conversion courses for different types of helicopters; you may have received a rating for flying a certain type of helicopter and you may add another rating for a different type. They offer conversions for Robinson R22s and R44s, Eurocopter EC120s and EC130s and Bell 222s. For those international students who wish to improve their knowledge of English for the English Proficiency Test, the school offers a special package that includes courses in English at the Galway Cultural Institute.

    Blue Star Helicopter

    • Blue Star Helicopter is located near Cork Airport. Robinson R-22 Beta II and R-44 Raven I helicopters are used in training for private and commercial pilot licenses. Upon completion of the requirements for a private license, Blue Star offers a self-fly/hire program to allow students to obtain the necessary flying hours to qualify for the commercial pilot course. The school also offers an LPC (License Proficiency Check) refresher course. To maintain a license, an LPC check must be made each year with an IAA-approved examiner. Blue Star also offers conversion courses to fly different types of helicopters.
