How to Create a Course Catalog

Writing a course catalog is not difficult, but it does require a great deal of organization. Course catalogs usually put as much course information as possible into the document while using a minimum amount of space. The information in the catalog should be easy to find using the index and easy to read. With the right information and layout you can make the perfect course catalog for any school, technical course or college.

Create a cover page for your course catalog. There is a wide variety of design options. Some schools simply use a picture of their campus or buildings. While this is acceptable, a picture that includes actual students will help assimilate the reader. It will give personality to the school, representing school life, instead of just portraying the college as just another establishment. Other design options include minimalistic logos and themes; this style of design is very popular with larger establishments.

Write a mission statement and introduction. This introduction will present the school and information about the school to the students. A mission statement is a short statement that describes the purpose and goals of the school as a whole. Each individual department or school within the college can have its own mission statement as well, though this is not necessary.

Write your table of contents. Include all the areas of study with page numbers for quick reference to the specific page. A key should also be included with symbols and descriptions. This will help the reader identify symbols, numbers and abbreviations and know what they stand for. There should be a list of course designators, which is the three-letter abbreviation for the course programs. For example, "ACT" is the abbreviation for Applied Computer Technologies and "BIO" is the abbreviation for Biology.

Write and organize the description of each course. This information can often be taken from the course syllabus. The descriptions should be in alphabetical and numerical order. The course number and/or code needs to be listed with the three-letter abbreviation for the course program and then the subsequent courses listed in sequential order. Next to the course number, list the course name and the amount of credits the class is worth. It is important to list the credits correctly, especially for students who need a precise number of credits to achieve either part or full-time schooling.

Include in the course description information such as the duration of course, the language the course will be conducted in, the level of the course along with the training materials needed. List any prerequisites or requirements, this will assure students do not sign up for a class he is not yet allowed to participate in. Again, this information can often be taken from the course syllabus.
