How to Galvanize Steel

Galvanizing steel is the process of coating the surface of steel with zinc. This helps protect steel from rust and other forms of corrosion. Galvanizing also gives the steel a shiny attractive appearance. The process is done industrially two ways: Hot dip galvanization, where the steel is immersed in molten zinc to obtain a zinc coating, and electrogalvanizing, which uses electrolysis to coat the steel with zinc. You can galvanize steel yourself using galvanizing spray.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit a local dealer in steel doors to seek professional assistance from experts to decide on the best make of galvanizing spray to purchase. Visit several stores before purchasing to compare the prices and obtain the best bargain.

    • 2

Clean the grease off the steel using a rag moistened with degreasing cleaner. Using the sandpaper, rub the surface of the steel to eliminate any rust. Brush off any remaining rust particles with a dry, clean rag.

    • 3

Set your piece of cardboard on the floor. Place your clean steel on the cardboard.

    • 4

Shake the can of galvanizing spray for two or three minutes, depending on the manufacturer's instructions, to stir up the contents.

    • 5

Spray a thin coating on the visible surface of the steel object. Do not flip the object and spray the unexposed side until the galvanized side is completely dry. Usually, the steel dries in an hour.

    • 6

Touch with your finger to verify whether the applied coating is completely dry. Flip over the object, exposing the nongalvanized side and again spray a thin coating on the surface.

    • 7

Let the galvanized surface dry for about one hour. Take the steel object to a cool dry place and allow it to cure for 12 to 24 hours before using it again.
