Instructions

    • 1

Establish what style you prefer. There are a lot of styles out there: pencil pants and skirts, painted clothes, ripped clothes and customized clothes. Go through magazines and online fashion sites to decide what you want, and then pick out the items you want to modify.

    • 2

Cut the hem at the bottom of the pants and stitch it to fit your ankle. Take the pants to the tailor for a professional finish. For a skirt, take the measurement of your hips using the tape measure, then stitch the sides around the hemline to fit the width of your hips. Cut off the excess material. This turns your straight or flared skirt into a stylish pencil skirt.

    • 3

Apply fabric paint in whatever patterns you prefer to your chosen pieces of clothing. Before the paint dries, add glitter or sequins to get a sparkly effect. Comb out the paint as it dries using a combing tool in a zigzag or spiral pattern to attain a combed effect on the fabric.

    • 4

Rip sections keeping in mind not to expose too much skin. Ripping your clothes can be done intentionally and artistically. Rip jeans on areas around the knees and just above the ankle. Make the tears in a horizontal manner. On tops, rip the area just below the chest or on the back or sides.

    • 5

Pick out material that you want to stitch onto your clothes. This can be large colorful buttons, shells or to even other pieces of fabric with different textures or colors.

    • 6

Stitch on the buttons in a pattern or in random positions. Cut out the fabric that you want to use, and determine where you want to place it on your clothing. Sew the fabric onto your clothes; for example, fabric designs on the knee area, around the back pockets or on the hemline draw attention to a simple pair of jeans.

    • 7

Determine how long you want your short sleeves to be, and then cut off the excess length. Make an inward flap of the material at the end of the sleeve and stitch it to create a hemline. For a professional finish, take it to a tailor near you.
