How to Make Formal Clothing

Formal wear refers to clothing worn to social events such as dances, weddings, evening parties or dinners. Such events can come with specifications that men's formal attire be "black tie" or "white tie," with either requiring dark suits or tuxedos. Formal wear for women features evening and ballroom gowns made of velvet, taffeta or silk. The event often dictates specific dress or color of clothing for women. For example, when attending a wedding ceremony, dress colors other than black and white usually are preferred. Making formal clothing requires special attention to aspects such as color, design, length, material and style. Basic skills in sewing are necessary when making formal clothing.

Instructions

    • 1

Sketch the design of the formal clothing you want to make, such as trousers and shirts for men or dresses, blouses and skirts for women.

    • 2

Take your measurements specific to your choice of formal wear. For example, measure waist, hips and length for a skirt. Measure shoulder width, torso length, arm length and width for shirts or blouses.

    • 3

Drape and pin the fabric to the duct tape dummy; use your sketch for reference. Mark a stitching line at points where the fabric joins, including the hem, waistband and the sides. Alternatively, use a pattern purchased at a fabric store or from a tailor.

    • 4

Place the pattern over the fabric and cut out the material. Stitch along the outline of fabric giving an allowance of 1/2 inch from the edge of the fabric.

    • 5

For a makeshift pattern, place a ready-made shirt or skirt on the fabric and cut around its outline. Give an allowance around the outline to ensure there is enough fabric for seams.

    • 6

Mark stitching lines as indicated on the pattern by drawing on the fabric, 1/2 inch away from the edge. Stitch along these lines with a sewing machine.

    • 7

Cut off any hanging threads or excess material after stitching the pieces together.
