How to Find Out if a School Is Licensed

Most states require that a school be licensed, approved, or registered so as to operate legally within that state. But state licensure or approval is different from accreditation. Accreditation is optional and it allows the internal management of a school to set its own curriculum and standards of education. Licensure enables states to maintain quality standards of education across the state. Finding out if a school is licensed is a simple process when you have the right contacts.

Instructions

    • 1

Find out if your state requires all schools to be licensed by contacting the state's board of education (State department of education). Locate the contact information of your state department of education through a database such as the National Association of States Board of Education or through the Elearn Portal. Some schools such as public and state universities may be exempt from licensing requirements.

    • 2

Ask the department of education for the contact information of the state licensing agency. Request for the address, telephone, email as well as the website name of the state licensing agency. Contact the state licensing agency.

    • 3

Provide the agency with the name of the school you want to find out about. Alternatively, key in the name of the school in the state agency's website to see the information concerning that school's licensure.

    • 4

Visit the school if possible to ask whether it is licensed or not. Politely ask to see their certificate of licensure. Some schools display their certification in the receiving or administration office.
