How to Be a Licensed Esthetician

An esthetician (or aesthetician) is a licensed cosmetologist specializing in skin care. Estheticians typically perform facials, body treatments, such as wraps or wax treatments, and makeup application. Some may specialize in alternative treatments, such as aromatherapy. Licensed estheticians often work in spas, salons and medical facilities. Estheticians working in medical facilities often care for patients with skin trauma. Licensure requirements vary by state, but typically include formal aesthetics training and testing.

Learn your state's licensing and training requirements. Locate your state in the list of state board information to find out your requirements. Locate an accredited school in your area that adheres to your state's regulations. Look for a credentials page on the school's website to find an explanation of the school's accreditation.

Set up a tour with your chosen schools. A tour guide will show you around the facilities, explain the curriculum and tuition. Listen carefully and critically, each tour guide is trying to sell the school's benefits and students should choose the school best suited to their needs. If needed, apply for financial aid. Many grants and loans are available for qualified students wishing to apply to a cosmetology or technical school. Every qualified school should have a financial aid officer to help you through the process.

Complete training. This may or may not include an apprenticeship depending on your state's requirements. Training typically lasts between four and nine months. Apply as a full-time student to complete training faster.

Pass all written and practical exams to obtain licensure. Testing requirements, like school requirements, vary by state. Ask your school about how they help students to find jobs. Check student services, online and in the paper for job openings.
