How to Make a Celsius Thermometer

Celsius (Centigrade) is the standard temperature scale for most of the world, though Fahrenheit is the standard used in the United States. A thermometer is a glass tube with a bulb-like shape at one end with measurements inscribed on the tubing. The tube is a vacuum partly filled with mercury or hydro-carbon fluid. Temperature changes at the bulb level cause the fluid to rise or fall in the tube.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix equal parts of rubbing alcohol and water in the clear plastic bottle to fill a quarter

portion of the bottle. Add a few drops of food color and mix well

    • 2

Insert the straw into the bottle taking care not to touch the bottom of the bottle.

    • 3

Seal the open end of the bottle neck with modeling clay holding the straw at the center

taking care not to choke the air flow in the straw. Seal well so that air does not pass

through any crevices in the neck except the straw.

    • 4

Mark the Celsius measurements using one of the methods from the Tips section. The thermometer is ready for use.
