How to Build a Straw Rocket Launcher

Newton's Third Law of Motion states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Demonstrating this concept with a straw rocket launcher will make a memorable lesson for young students. The rocket launcher can be built with inexpensive, easy to find parts. Use it to educate youngsters about physics in a way that is both entertaining and safe.

  • Soda bottle
  • Modeling clay
  • Large straws
  • Small straws
  • Hammer
  • Nails

Instructions

      Empty the soda bottle and thoroughly clean it.

      Screw the cap back onto the bottle and punch a small hole in it with a hammer and nail.

      Insert a small straw into the hole just far enough so it rests firmly inside.

      Seal any gaps between the hole and the straw with modeling clay.

      Seal one end of a large straw with modeling clay. Slide the other end over the small straw.

    • 6

      Squeeze the soda bottle hard and fast and watch the large straw fly across the room.
