How to Build a Biome Model

Biomes are the local interaction of living organisms -- including communities of animals , plants, and soil organisms -- and climate conditions for specific habitats. They are classified as aquatic, desert, forest, tundra or terrestrial. Creating a biome model provides a student with the chance to learn what elements are included in each type of habitat.

Instructions

    • 1

Plan for the type of biome to be built and select the appropriate materials. Refer to text books and nature programs to find out about the types of plants, animals and terrain associated with the unique biome. The material required to build a biome model will vary according to the type or environment. For example a forest biome will require dense foliage, while a desert biome will require sand and rocks.

    • 2

Construct the biome in a large box from the bottom up. Paint the interior of the box with a background to match the specific terrain and allow it time to dry. Construct the ground terrain using sand, dirt or other material to simulate the environment of the biome. Use clay, sand, craft paper or balled up newspaper to make rocky terrains or sea beds.

    • 3

Construct plants and other foliage from sticks and craft paper. Cut out animal shapes from craft paper or form them from modeling clay. Use wire to suspend fish from the bottom of the box to simulate ocean depths. Hang birds from the top of the box with string or wire to simulate flight. Clear plastic wrap can be used to cover the front of the box to simulate water for an aquatic biome.

    • 4

Observe and view the model from different angles and adjust the materials and items wherever needed for best view and balance. Ensure everything is glued down firmly. Create a legend of the items that appear in the biome. Add a description of the biome model on the outside of the model box or construct a data plate.
