How to Build a Model of a Killer Whale

Creating a model of a Killer Whale can be done in a number of ways, depending on what materials you have. It can be done most simply using white and black Play-Doh. However, if learning how to make something from scratch is part of what you'd like to teach, then this model -- using clay you make at home and bake in the oven -- is a good choice. It only requires a few simple ingredients and items you likely have in your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Make the clay you'll bake by putting into your large bowl: 4 cups flour, 1 cup salt, and 1½ cups water. Stir with a heavy wooden spoon until it reaches a moldable consistency.

    • 2

Mold clay into the shape of the Killer Whale, using pictures for reference. Be sure and add all the details and try to keep the size in scale as best you can.

    • 3

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Place the clay Killer Whale model on the nonstick baking sheet. Bake until it develops a light brown tint. Time will vary depending on the size of the model and can take as long as an hour.

    • 4

Cool the Killer Whale model on a wire rack before handling. This may take a while, depending on the size of the model. While the model is cooling, prepare a surface for your modeling paints by covering it with newspaper.

    • 5

Set the Killer Whale figure on the newspaper and, using a picture for reference, sketch out the body markings lightly with a pencil. This will allow you to make any corrections to your model before you apply paint. When satisfied, paint your model and leave to dry.
