How to Learn With Visual AIDS

Visual aids are useful tools in learning any subject. These aids make the concepts or ideas no longer just words, but images. Images process faster in the brain than words do. Learning with visual aids is especially effective for those that have learning difficulties, but they can be used at all levels of learning.

Think about what you want to learn and what visual aids will support this. You can use a wide range of aids such as a whiteboard, flip charts, objects, models, photographs or pictures. Choose a visual aid that is simple and contains one primary idea. Too many ideas in the image you are using will confuse and distract from the main idea. The aid needs to capture the eye to make you immediately understand the basic concept.

Print out a picture. Write on it adding any relevant information and store it for future reference. Draw pictures of what you are learning. Draw the same picture a few times. Repetition helps you to remember the image and the associated information. Use pictures that have bright colors to keep your eyes busy.

Use a variety of visual aids. This will help you stay interested in what you are learning. Using the same form of visual aid for each idea you are learning will decrease its effectiveness. Use a visual aid that you can both see and touch as well. A model of a piece of anatomy, such as a heart or organ, for example, uses both senses, sight and touch and will achieve a double emphasis about the point being learned.

Use charts and graphs to learn numerical information. Charts and graphs can be used to illustrate a variety of data, helping you to organize the information, making it easier to read and understand. The easier a concept is to understand, the easier it will be to remember. Use PowerPoint to create presentations with a chart or graph and a relevant picture.

Buy a dictionary that has pictures corresponding to the words. This is an excellent resource when learning a new language, as the picture association will help you recall the words and their meanings later on.
