How to Study At Your Own Pace With a Home Study Course

Online courses allow home study, often at your own pace. Taking home study courses allows you to study around your current schedule, a helpful tool in this high-paced world. Be sure the course you enroll in allows self-paced study and testing and set realistic goals with your time. Self-paced, online courses are available from many universities and specialized training programs. Many of the programs have real-time chats with other students, professors and teaching assistants.

Instructions

    • 1

Write a realistic schedule for your studies. For example, if you work Monday through Thursday, you most likely will be tired by Thursday evening. Write down in your calendar realistic study times and stick to them. Maintaining a study schedule is easier when it is written down and followed. Underestimate the time you need, rather than overestimate, as you can add time to your schedule as you progress. Do not burn yourself out in the beginning.

    • 2

Read all texts and assignments a minimum of three times. The first read is a quick and perfunctory read to get the gist of the topic. The second read is the in-depth and intricate study of the material. During the second read, write down all questions you have. Try to find the answers to your questions when going through the third read. Break the reading up. Pace yourself.

    • 3

Take advantage of the online chats and real-time study groups. Come prepared to the meetings. Have a list of questions and areas with which you need assistance. Type them into the chat boxes and either do screen captures with the responses, or do quick cut-n-pastes to a word processor to reference and use after the chats.

    • 4

Save or make printouts of all tests and quizzes given online. These are handy reference tools you use to go back and check your weaknesses against.

    • 5

Take a break. If you are not retaining the information or are becoming overwhelmed, take advantage of the fact the home-study course is at your pace. It is better to break and refresh than muddle through barely making mediocre grades.
