How to Retain a Copy of a GED

Your GED, also known as the General Education Development, is a substitute diploma necessary to get into a higher-educational institution, the military or in some cases, even to get a job. Perhaps you have lost your official GED. Fortunately, having the necessary documentation and research skills will allow you to have a copy sent to you.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact the location where you took your GED test. There are a number of online and off-line resources that will allow you to locate your testing center. Online telephone directories, for example, can be used to locate the address and phone number of the testing center.

    • 2

Gather two forms of ID--one having your picture--to verify your identity. When you contact the testing center for a copy of your GED, they may need to verify your identity by submitting one or more forms of ID by mail or fax, which will allow the testing center to release the GED and send it to your address.

    • 3

Have a check, cashier's check or money order ready. Sometimes the testing center may charge a fee to mail a copy of the GED to you, or it may charge for the work required to issue you another GED. The center also may require a self-addressed envelope. Typically, the cost for a replacement GED can be as low as $5 and possibly higher than $14. The pricing varies by testing center and state.

    • 4

Contact the testing location and determine what the procedure is to have a copy of your GED sent. The testing center may require a special form that needs to be filled out online or printed. A representative will tell you the quickest way possible to have the copy of your GED sent.
