Qualifications of GED Teachers

A Bachelor's or Master's Degree

• Most states require adult education teachers to have a bachelor's or master's degree in education, social work or psychology. Private and community programs usually require a teaching certificate or GED certification. Teachers must have a thorough knowledge of academic subjects, including writing, reading, math, science and social studies.

Knowledge of GED Test

• A GED teacher prepares students to successfully pass the GED test. She must have a complete understanding of all six sections of the test.

Design curriculum based on student needs

• Effective GED teachers must know how to design lesson plans to fit the needs of students. Because GED students may come from vastly different backgrounds, teachers must be able to bridge the knowledge gaps of these students. For example, some students may have already mastered math in their own country but have no English language skills; other students may speak English well but have no math skills.

Enroll in professional development workshops

• GED teachers must be sensitive to the differing languages and experiences of adult learners to establish understanding and trust. Workshops and programs that teach intercultural communication and sociology are good investments for GED teachers.

Confidence in speaking and confronting adults

• Teaching adults is not the same as teaching grade school children. A GED teacher does not have to deal with the discipline problems encountered in grade school. However, adult teachers must be prepared for challenges from adult learners who will have their own opinions and ideas. Many adult learners are immigrants and may have strong assumptions about the United States. Teachers must not be intimidated if they are challenged from time to time.

Patience with adult learners

• GED teachers must have patience with adult learners. Cultural differences and language literacy can create frustration for teacher and learner. Teachers must have enough patience to repeat an idea again and again until it is understood.

Teach effective life skills

• Not only must GED teachers educate adult learners in basic academic skills, but they also must teach them effective life skills, such as job hunting, problem solving and confidence. Many GED teachers will need social, psychiatric or counseling skills.
